BRI-IBD Academic Database Access

From September 2007, a grant from the IBD has made database access available for students from a number of academic institutions.

The BREW Database contains over 70,000 records related to brewing and malting science is the largest database of its kind.

If you completed a database registration form but have not yet received your username and password please email, p.mata@bri-advantage.com

Login to the Database

Guide to using the database:

1. Click on the link above to Login into the database and enter your personal username and password.

2. Click on the Database listed which is:
      BREW—Brewing literature Database

3. Click Open button, you will go into the simple search page. There are several icons on the top of Simple Search Bar:
    Expert Search—allows you to run advanced searches
    Index Browse—helps you choose terms to build up your searches
    Search History—helps you review and run searches in the current session.
    Saved Search—you can save searches for future use

4. We recommend the ‘Expert Search’ function. Click on this icon you will see the advanced search page.

5. At the end of a search please remember to click on Logout at the top right of the page

Hints:

Unlike searching in Google, it is not possible to search for complete sentences or phrases.

  • Terms need to be combined with AND or OR.
  • If words appear together in a phrase the letters ADJ should be used.
  • For plurals and truncation words, use the dollar symbol, $.

Example 1: the latest publications on malted barley

Step 1, click on Expert Search

Step 2, type malted adj barley into the first search bar and leave the ‘Paragraph’ bar as ‘Every paragraph’.

Step 3, type 2007 into the second search bar and choose ‘PY-publication year’ in the ‘Paragraph’ bar.

Step 3, click ‘Submit’ you will see the results of the search. The items about malted barley in 2007 will be displayed.

Step 4, click on one of the items and you will see the full details about this article including TI (title), AU (author), BIB (bibliography), ABS (abstract), KW (keyword), BN (bulletin number).

Example 2: patents about PET

Step 1, type PET into the first search bar

Step 2, type p into the second search bar and choose ‘document type’ in ‘paragraph’ bar.

Step 3, click ‘Submit’.
