PERFORMING A SEARCH

Each database search screen has fields where you can search for terms appearing either anywhere in the document or in specific paragraphs. Multiple terms entered in any of these fields can be separated by any of the search operators listed below.

SEARCH OPERATORS

If you do not use any operators between your words the system defaults to the Or operator.

And
Use the And operator to retrieve documents that contain both of the specified search terms. The operator places no condition on where the terms are found in relation to one another. The terms simply have to appear somewhere in the same document

Or
Use the Or operator to retrieve documents that contain one or both specified terms. This operator places no condition on where the terms are found in relation to one another. One or both terms have to appear somewhere in a document

Not
Use the Not operator to retrieve documents that contain the first search term you specify but not the second term

Same
Use the Same operator to retrieve documents that contain the second term in the same paragraph as the first term

Near
Use the Near operator to retrieve documents in which the second search term is found in the same sentence as the first. The order in which the terms appear in the sentence is unimportant. You can modify the number of documents retrieved with this operator by specifying the maximum number of searchable words that can occur between your search terms in a sentence. e.g. near3

Adj
Use the Adj operator to retrieve documents in which the second search term is found in the same sentence as the first. The order in which you specify the search terms is the order in which the terms must be found in the document. You can modify the number of documents retrieved with this operator by specifying the maximum number of searchable words that can occur between your search terms in a sentence. e.g. adj4

RESTRICTING SEARCHES TO A PARTICULAR FIELD

For each database there is a choice of two default fields that you can use to restrict your searching to. These differ depending on the database you are searching. The default fields for each database are as follows:

AGRO
Trade Name
Manufacturer/Distributor
BAHD
Common Name
Cause
BING
Trade Name
Supplier
BOOK
Title

BREW

GLOS

QUAR

These two fields can be linked together by any of the operators listed in the drop down box between the fields.

If the choice of fields listed in the drop down box does not cover the field you require, you can instead use the 'Words Anywhere' box and limit the field by typing in the field code you require e.g. 1999.py. This would retrieve all items published in 1999.

A full list of field codes for each database can be obtained by contacting David Fordyce using the 'Contact Us' button.

RECALLING YOUR SEARCH HISTORY

To retrieve earlier search statements, click on the 'Back reference:' drop down box displayed at the top of each search page. This will give you a search statement number corresponding to the search you wish to retrieve e.g. S2. You will need to enter this search statement number in the 'Words Anywhere' box and press the 'Submit Query' button to retrieve the search you require.

SORTING

You can sort documents by using the 'Sort by' box which appears on the first search screen and on the hits screen at the bottom. You can sort by any of the specified fields listed in the drop down box, in either ascending or descending order.

The sort options for each database are as follows:
